It’s been a minute since I have written on this blog. What an adventure it’s been! What started as an escape of sorts leaping to go overseas has continued in many ways. Some big steps. Some little ones.
I took some time off from writing for a while. It seemed to make sense for some reason. I can’t say that there was anything too crazy or exciting to share during that time away. I was grateful to go “home” in some way. I spent time with family back in the Midwest and connected with some dear folks at Unity Village at their base in Lee’s Summit. I also got to share a great year in Hamilton, Missouri, a super little town about an hour north of Kansas City. Honestly, I had never heard of Hamilton before I got there. I loved it nonetheless…it’s simple streets, the surrounding Amish culture, and some quiet nights there with myself and other things I loved.
You can’t mention Hamilton without talking about quilts. Known as “quilt town”, they attract visitors far and wide to check out the local and extensive quilting shops. There’s also a quilt museum. Plus, an annual airing of the quilts celebration when everyone puts out their quilts for fresh air and they line the streets of the town. I believe the largest spool of thread is there! I met some wonderful people in a quilting group nearby and I even completed my very own quilt with extensive assistance from a kind friend and quilter.
Of course, I got to housesit and take care of some kitties while I was there – a new band of felines to count among friends and appreciated the wonderful hospitality and kindness of the homeowners as well.
Where did I go after that housesit and time in Hamilton was complete? Well, if you’ve been on this road with me for any time you might be able to hazard a guess… back to Texas!
I can’t say I am exactly a Texas girl. But I have spent some time here and this has been a base for me in a way, perhaps. My doctors are here and a few folks I know. I have regularly returned in part as Texas has been my legal domicile in recent years as I have wandered around. Texas, we will call her “she” is also a good friend in some way it seems. Her rough dusty roads and surrounding tumbleweeds blowing in the yes hot… hot summer months echo somehow in the honestly of my mind.
My latest housesit has me here with a couple of new “cool cats.” A rough little duo of a crazy outdoor boy cat and his sometimes companion the more gentle, playful girly tabby. It’s fun to hang out with them and a touch of nature in this neighborhood. I am touched to often see the deer hanging out in the yard, friendly and gently and somehow still a bit alarmed at times at my presence. There is also a great collection of foxes that stop by and wander through as well.
I have been here for a little while now. A handful of months. And we will see where things go from here. I got to stay in a tiny house in the woods nearby for a few weeks when the homeowners returned for a brief spell before they headed on their larger adventure. I did a little temp work for a company in town. And I’ve been on the road delivering a whole bevy of things with the apps at hand these days – groceries, food, home supplies and even on one occasion… a single key.
I can’t say life is exactly fat and big at this time. All these years moving around and doing my thing… I can still be hesitant and shy in nature at times in some ways.
I am grateful for my regular assembly of characters that keep the water wheel turning in my world and life. My buddhist practice with Soka Gakkai International offering a little connection with local faces and company in the practice here just outside of Austin, Texas. Of course I can’t forget to mention my “home” SGI group in my mom’s small town in Missouri who were such a great and regular source of prayer companionship, connection and joy.
The newest “kid on the block” for me in my assembly of spiritual practices and nourishment is a man named Charlie Goldsmith. Some people may have heard of him from his show The Healer on TLC. My trusted friend and Reiki teacher suggested I check him out and I have been on his “team” so to say ever since. This includes participating in his regular online Zoom groups offered affordably for a simple donation. These sessions as so great and offer a palpable sample of his energetic healing capacity and gift. Additionally, I am participating in his yearlong healing course where he shows students how he does what he does and answers questions and offers support through the year.
So for now, it is Wednesday. I am at home. I am writing in a cool attic like space with a cozy work and sleeping spot at my current housesit. In true “Scorpio” form, the blinds are closed in the middle of the afternoon and I am tucked away privately with a little gentle light overhead.
And I suppose… that’s the story… for now… for today.
